PLEASANT HILL Lanes:  Monday, March 16, 2020:  Memo from:  https://bowlphl.com/
In these uncertain and troubling times, we have decided to follow suggestions from our local and national leaders suggesting that we limit our social interactions. To do our part to help mitigate the situation, we will be closing Pleasant Hill Lanes until April 1 effective at the close of business today, with the possibility of that time being extended. Our customers and employees have always been our priority in this business, hoping everyone enjoys themselves. Social interaction is a very important and necessary part of all of our lives, it adds to our well being. If giving up our individual freedom for a while to protect each other is what we need to do then we will. Everybody’s health is at stake, especially the sick and the elderly. We suggest you try to go out and take a short walk each day, enjoying the mild weather we have been having. Stay in touch with your family, friends and neighbors by phone or video chat. If you are a league bowler, someone from the center will be in touch with your league officer’s by March 30th to let them know further details. If you have a private event scheduled between now and April 1st, we will be contacting you about rescheduling. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again real soon.  Sincerely,  Cheryl Woodward

Week 7 Trivia Question: In what year was the first “national” womens’ bowling tournament contested?  (Clue:  it was held in St. Louis, Missouri)
Week 7 Trivia Answer:  “1916″ ;  Records show little activity until 1915, when Ellen Kelly, an avid bowler, formed the St. Louis Women’s Bowling Association. Buoyed by her success, she wrote to proprietors across the country asking for names of women who might be interested in a national organization of their own. She followed with letters to those women, urging the organization of local associations and offering advice on rules and establishing an organization. By the fall of 1916, Dennis Sweeney,a St. Louis bowling proprietor and sportswriter, helped Mrs. Kelly stage the first “national tournament.” There were eight teams entered and champions were decided in team, doubles, singles and all events. The prize fund was $225. Following the tournament, those 40 women from 11 cities met at Sweeney’s Washington Recreation Parlor and created the national organization that became, after several name changes, the Women’s International Bowling Congress.
